Water, The chemistry of life.
Whenever we attempt to determine whether there is life as we know it on Mars or other planets, scientists first seek to establish whether or not water is present. Why? Because life on earth totally depends on water.
A High percentage of living things, both plant and animal are found in water. All life on earth is thought to have arisen from water. The bodies of all living organisms are composed largely of water. About 70 to 90 percent of all organic matter is water.
The chemical reactions in all plants and animals that support life take place in a water medium. Water not only provides the medium to make these life sustaining reactions possible, but water itself is often an important reactant or product of these reactions. In short, the chemistry of life is water chemistry.
Water, the universal solvent
Water is a universal, superb solvent due to the marked polarity of the water molecule and its tendency to form hydrogen bonds with other molecules. One water molecule, expressed with the chemical symbol H2O, consists of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.
Standing alone, the hydrogen atom contains one positive proton at its core with one negative electron revolving around it in a three-dimensional shell. Oxygen, on the other hand, contains 8 protons in its nucleus with 8 electrons revolving around it. This is often shown in chemical notation as the letter O surrounded by eight dots representing 4 sets of paired electrons.
The single hydrogen electron and the 8 electrons of oxygen are the key to the chemistry of life because this is where hydrogen and oxygen atoms combine to form a water molecule, or split to form ions.
Hydrogen tends to ionize by losing its single electron and form single H+ ions, which are simply isolated protons since the hydrogen atom contains no neutrons. A hydrogen bond occurs when the electron of a single hydrogen atom is shared with another electronegative atom such as oxygen that lacks an electron.
Polarity of water molecules
In a water molecule, two hydrogen atoms are covalently bonded to the oxygen atom. But because the oxygen atom is larger than the hydrogen’s, its attraction for the hydrogen’s electrons is correspondingly greater so the electrons are drawn closer into the shell of the larger oxygen atom and away from the hydrogen shells. This means that although the water molecule as a whole is stable, the greater mass of the oxygen nucleus tends to draw in all the electrons in the molecule including the shared hydrogen electrons giving the oxygen portion of the molecule a slight electronegative charge.
The shells of the hydrogen atoms, because their electrons are closer to the oxygen, take on a small electropositive charge. This means water molecules have a tendency to form weak bonds with water molecules because the oxygen end of the molecule is negative and the hydrogen ends are positive.
A hydrogen atom, while remaining covalently bonded to the oxygen of its own molecule, can form a weak bond with the oxygen of another molecule. Similarly, the oxygen end of a molecule can form a weak attachment with the hydrogen ends of other molecules. Because water molecules have this polarity, water is a continuous chemical entity.
These weak bonds play a crucial role in stabilizing the shape of many of the large molecules found in living matter. Because these bonds are weak, they are readily broken and re-formed during normal physiological reactions. The disassembly and re-arrangement of such weak bonds is in essence the chemistry of life.
To illustrate water’s ability to break down other substances, consider the simple example of putting a small amount of table salt in a glass of tap water. With dry salt (NaCl) the attraction between the electropositive sodium (Na+) and electronegative chlorine (Cl-) atoms of salt is very strong until it is placed in water. After salt is placed in water, the attraction of the electronegative oxygen of the water molecule for the positively charged sodium ions, and the similar attraction of the electropositive hydrogen ends of the water molecule for the negatively charged chloride ions, are greater than the mutual attraction between the outnumbered Na+ and Cl- ions. In water the ionic bonds of the sodium chloride molecule are broken easily because of the competitive action of the numerous water molecules.

As we can see from this simple example, even the delicate configuration of individual water molecules enables them to break relatively stronger bonds by converging on them. This is why we call water the universal solvent. It is a natural solution that breaks the bonds of larger, more complex molecules. This is the chemistry of life on earth, in water and on land.
Oxidation-reduction reactions
Basically, reduction means the addition of an electron (e-), and its converse, oxidation means the removal of an electron. The addition of an electron, reduction, stores energy in the reduced compound. The removal of an electron, oxidation, liberates energy from the oxidized compound. Whenever one substance is reduced, another is oxidized.
To clarify these terms, consider any two molecules, A and B, for example.
When molecules A and B come into contact, here is what happens:
B grabs an electron from molecule A.
Molecule A has been oxidized because it has lost an electron.
The net charge of B has been reduced because it has gained a negative electron (e-).
In biological systems, removal or addition of an electron constitutes the most frequent mechanism of oxidation-reduction reactions. These oxidation-reduction reactions are frequently called redox reactions.

What this article will be discussing are low-fat foods that are considered Power Foods, those foods that have extraordinary nutritive, health and/or healing properties. However, it is always easier to prevent diseases than it is to fight them once they have already started.
Once you start eating these foods, your energy level will soon pick up. The body’s cells and organs will also stop constantly sending signals to your brain that you are hungry when in fact your body is sorely lacking nutrients so it is sending those signals that are translated into hunger. It will become easier for you to lose weight under these conditions. There are many healthy foods, but these listed here have been singled out as having extraordinary health benefits.
Alkalinity: One thing all these foods have in common is that they all produce an alkaline condition in the body to varying degrees. This is crucial because keeping your body alkaline is what helps stave off any and all diseases. Diseases start and thrive well in an acidic environment and will not start or thrive well in an alkaline environment. While creating an acidic environment in your body through poor diet and pharmaceuticals could promote certain diseases, more dangerous is that if one does start either because of diet, genetic or environmental reasons, it will have the perfect environment to flourish.
Enzymes: Enzymes are large complex proteins. Upon entering the stomach all proteins are broken down by acids and digestive chemicals into amino acids which are then absorbed and utilized by the body to make new proteins, provide energy, and repair damaged tissues. We are born with the ability to produce a certain number of enzymes and once we have reached that number, our body can NOT produce any more. It is important to eat at least some of your food raw because the enzymes in food are destroyed when cooked, processed or freeze-dried. Anything eaten out of can has had the enzymes, the most vital part of its nutritive properties removed from that food. Enzymes work with minerals or vitamins but are more important than either of them. Enzyme deficiency can lead to a host of diseases and ailments. We can literally do nothing such as move or even blink without metabolic enzymes. Enzymes are by far one of the most important elements in our diet.
Water: While often not considered a food, it not only is a food, but it can be argued that it is by far THE most important food of all. The human body is composed of 80% water, the balance being primarily minerals, which is why they are so important. “Chronic cellular dehydration painfully and prematurely kills. Mineral Water or Purifed Water? Water purified by distillation or reverse osmosis should never be consumed. It depletes your body of minerals over time. It goes into you pure, but it certainly does not come out pure. Of course, it gets those minerals from our bodies. People who drink purified water often complain of indigestion and gas. Only water with minerals in it should be consumed.
Alkaline or Ionized Water is electronically restructured water that has some incredible health benefits. Garlic. Strong antibiotic that can actually kill infecting bacteria. It is an antioxidant and also helps lower high blood pressure, lower cholesterol, improves circulation, impotence, pregnancy, antifungal, diabetes, cardiovascular health, coughs and colds, stomach conditions, cancer.
Hot Peppers. Very good for digestion. Another great immune system builder.
Bee Pollen. A truly superior, pure, alkaline food. One could live on nothing else.
Green Superfoods. Wheat grass juice, barley green, kelp. They are extremely pure, full of enzymes, chlorophyll, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.
What “Foods” You Should Not Eat
When we think of food, we think of something that provides energy and nutrition to the body. The reason “foods” is in quotations is because many of these things should NOT be considered foods at all because of the deleterious effect they have on human health. All these “foods” have something in common as well: they are substances that produce acid waste in the body to varying degrees. They offer little or no nutrition left in the “food” because it has been removed through cooking and processing.
Soft Drinks. The biggest offender, the worst thing you can put in your body is soft drinks, in particular colas. Soft drinks are made with purified water and are loaded with phosphates which pull minerals out of the body. They are extremely acidic, with a pH of 2.5-3.0, which is several thousand times more acidic than our bodies! Soft drinks are by far the worst thing that people put in themselves without any warning of the possible harm they can cause your health! Soft drinks steal water from your body by acting like a diuretic. For every glass of soda, you must drink 8-12 glasses of water to replace the water loss from your body! To counteract the acidity soft drinks plunges your body into, you must drink even more.
Beware of any product sold in aluminum packaging, especially something that is extremely acidic such as soft drinks because it can leach the aluminum into the product. Many deodorants contain aluminum as well. Alzheimer patients have all been found to have aluminum in their brains.
Processed and Highly Refined Foods. Highly processed foods, many that you may never suspect, can often be quite dangerous to our health. They have been stripped of their mineral and vitamin content and often replaced with synthetic vitamins. They also have been stripped of their vital enzymes. In this condition, these foods produce dangerous amounts of acid waste in the body. Highly refined sugar, flour & vinegar should be avoided as well. Trans Fats (partially Hydrogenated Vegetable oils).
Fast Foods and Fried Foods. These are processed foods, void of much of their natural nutritional value. French fries are a prime example of a food such as the potato that has been stripped of its nutrients (the skin), frozen and then deep fried so there is nothing left but pure starch, which produces high amounts of acid waste in the body. These foods are often high in fat should be avoided as well.

What is REVERSE OSMOSIS water?
Reverse Osmosis is water that has been purified by forcing water through an extremely fine membrane that removes everything that is dissolved in the water such as minerals and even dissolved oxygen. This produces the same product as distilled water. It is most often used for flat irons, humidifiers, autoclaves and fish tanks. Purified water is not a prefered water for drinking.
